My art deconstructs deep psychological thoughts and feelings. Through exploration of the often-complex human psyche, I discover the beauty in distortion. I dissect our human world and values, using visceral imagery as a communication tool. The work concerns our unlearning as a culture and evolving our beliefs and processes.
Each piece disassembles the trauma and conditioning of our integrated society, covering subjects such as self-esteem, body image, inequality, colonialism and popular culture. I take an honest look at relationships – the ones we have with others and ourselves. My artwork celebrates the hope and connection that comes from our existence. A main theme throughout my body of work is the focus on acceptance of our human vulnerability.
I am heavily influenced by the study of the mind, gaining insight from my work and ongoing study as an Integrative Arts Psychotherapist. The intertwined layers visually communicate fundamental psychotherapeutic theories. My use of mixed media and colour within the layers also communicates the complexity of our existence.
I aim to alter the viewers perception of reality and offer a different narrative. Ultimately, I want the viewer to walk away understanding that the darker parts of humanity can be progressed into something magnificent, shedding the shame and humiliation we are often taught to feel. Our lives are intricately woven into the way we connect to our world. I facilitate the viewer to take in meaning at a variety of depths that they are prepared to take on.
